There are lots of great reasons to implement repower measures

There are many factors that make repowering a PV plant economically viable.

Achieving improved efficiency

The efficiency of new modules and inverters have significantly increased in recent years, while costs have fallen sharply

Avoiding planning errors

Changes in external factors or errors in the original planning can result in lower yields from the solar power system

Preventing availability losses

Defective components or poor performance on the part of the manufacturer lead to yield losses due to frequent downtime

Minimizing power losses

Degradation of components reduces the performance of the system, and therefore impacts the return on your investment

Our promise for your solar repowering plant

Repowering offers financial potential

Show description

It is better to be preventive than reactive. Here’s why.

You can increase your plant efficiency by 4-6%
Worthwhile after 5-10 yrs of operation
New warranties for new components
Lower costs and less frequent recurrence of repairs
Prepare plants for continued operation after the funding period
Comply with regulatory requirements for continued operation
Helps to extend maintenance intervals
Avoid downtimes and shutdowns

Benefits

Financial audit

Supported by our self-developed repowering tool, which provides a reliable basis for the investment decision, we will perform a detailed technical, legal and commercial analysis, to ensure that your PV repowering project is financially viable.

Technical Inspections

We assess and identify the potential of a PV repowering project by means of a technical evaluation and analysis of performance improvement, and coordinate with the grid operator to ensure strict regulatory compliance.

Holistic service: one point of contact, from the planning to the completion of the construction phase

greentech takes over the complete repowering process from planning to implementation: This is ensured on the one hand by an experienced team of engineers, and on the other hand by tried and tested quality management processes. You don’t have to worry about anything and have a personal contact person in case of questions.

Our greentech Repowering tool

Degrading modules, outdated inverters, and planning errors – it is well known that repowering measures during the operating phase might be a worthwhile investment. Doing so, owners of PV power plants get the chance to increase their profits by specific optimization measures. To provide a reliable and honest base for decision making, greentech developed a specialized Repowering tool. It helps providing a reliable profit analysis and assessment about the commercial characteristics of re-investments – before the planning phase has even started. Besides the technical design and implementation, greentech is now able to provide reliable profitability perspectives to the investor.

greentech Case Study: Repowering

Replacement of central inverters by string inverters for 2.6 MWp rooftop PV system in Germany

In order to extend the lifetime of an older plant portfolio, beyond the feed-in subsidy period, the customer decided to replace the inverters of a large portion of his photovoltaic plants with new ones. The plants are predominantly rooftop systems, with outputs between 241 kWp and 4.0 MWp. In total, the program consists of 18 revamping projects within the portfolio.

FAQ

How much does a repowering measure cost?
This is largely dependent on the type and scope of the repowering project in question. We consider every repowering project as an individual, independent project, and provide a specific design and costing structure for it. With our experience and our network of partners, we can ensure that you will receive the best quality-price ratio on the market. Many repowering projects have a short payback period, which we will analyze beforehand and monitor after completion.
What is the timeline to get a repowering project implemented?
The design phase usually takes 2-4 weeks. The execution depends on the lead times for the components and the scope of the project. Usually, we complete a repowering project within a couple of weeks, including commissioning and detailed documentation.
When does a repowering measure pay off?
An inverter repowering, for example during the FIT compensation period, is a good opportunity to prepare the system for continued operation thereafter. In many cases, the FIT provides compensation for the costs incurred – this is especially true for older plants that have high tariffs, but only have a short remaining term under the FIT. Projects can therefore pay for themselves after just two or three years. In addition, manufacturer guarantees and warranties are renewed for the new components.
Do you have a repowering checklist for self-assessment as a first step?
Every PV plant and repowering project is unique. The most efficient option is to discuss the viability of a repowering project with our experienced engineers. Please get in touch with us to get started!
The warranty on my components has expired; does investing in repowering make sense?
Yes, for example when there are technical weaknesses that lead to a reduction in the performance of the system, or if repair costs are increasing. But even if the existing components, for example inverters, are still running without issues, a repowering measure can make sense because these components have not only become cheaper in recent years, but also more efficient and capable of generating a yield increase of between 3% and 5% with the same capacity. This may justify an investment, even if the existing components are still running without issues.
Do I need new permits if I change the system components or if my output changes?
That depends on the individual repowering project and country-specific regulations. Plants that are subject to a feed-in tariff are usually highly regulated and require a consultation with the regulatory body when exchanging or repairing the PV modules. In case of inverter repowering, it is always advisable to get in touch with the grid operator at an early stage to discuss the specific requirements. In case of a new design, it might be necessary to review the original building permit. In a greentech repowering project, all these aspects are carefully considered.
