Secure data transmission and reliable plant control

The backbone of secure and stable plant operation

Greentech’s SCADA and IT concepts form the backbone for secure, grid-compliant, and transparent plant operation: We plan and implement the integration and connection of communication and control technology in line with plant design, electrical planning, and the requirements of grid operators and direct marketers.

We ensure that operational and production data reach the relevant stakeholders in a usable form via a continuously stable internet connection and a secured VPN – including a GDPR-compliant, individual user and access concept, and remote access where required for control.

This creates a coordinated interplay of communication, metering/measurement, control, and protection – serving as a conclusive basis for required verifications such as plant certificates and conformity declarations.

SCADA Wind Turbines

SCADA & IT – tailored to your plant type

Whether it’s a ground-mounted PV or wind power plant, a battery energy storage system, or a substation – each plant type has its own requirements for communication, control, and IT security. We deliver the right solution.

Photovoltaic Systems (PV)

Communication between the plant, grid operator, and direct marketer must function reliably from the outset. We plan and implement the SCADA and IT infrastructure to ensure that control commands are received cleanly and operations are not hindered by communication disruptions.

SCADA and IT tailored to plant design, electrical design, and requirements of grid operators and direct marketers

Project-specific documentation: system schematics, connection diagrams, description of the control concept
Secure remote access and IT protection for plant communication
Optional: Regular data backup and updates of network components (router, firewall, switch)

Wind Turbines (WTG)

In wind power plants, turbines, park control, grid operators, and direct marketers communicate in real-time – failures or delays in communication directly impact control and marketing. We plan and integrate the SCADA and IT infrastructure to match plant design, electrical design, and the requirements of all stakeholders.

Coordination of IT and SCADA infrastructure for reliable interaction of all components – from turbine control to park level, grid operator, and direct marketer
Secure remote access and IT protection for ongoing operations
Project-specific documentation: communication schematic, connection diagrams, description of the control concept
Optional: Recurring data backup and updates of network components (router, firewall, switch)

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

For battery energy storage systems, it is particularly important that command chains function smoothly and communication remains continuously undisturbed. We integrate SCADA and IT to match the design, electrical design, and the requirements of grid operators and direct marketers.

Design of reliable plant communication for secure operation – including clean command paths and short reaction times
Secure remote access and IT protection to minimize operational security risks
Clear access and authorization rules for controlled use of data and control functions
Optional: Recurring data backup and updates of network components (router, firewall, switch)

Substations (SS)

If a substation is required as a transfer station for connection to the high-voltage grid, reliable control technology is crucial. Based on the SS design and the detailed design of the connected systems, we plan and deliver the SCADA and IT technology for the substation.

Planning, delivery, and implementation of SCADA and IT for the substation – coordinated with plant design, electrical design, and grid operator specifications

Clearly structured plant IT including documentation, access concept, and user roles
Project-specific documents for operation and interfaces: communication schematic, connection diagrams, description of the control concept

Our IT & SCADA concept

Two pillars, one goal: robust, secure, and fully documented plant communication – from the network base to power plant control.

For PV, wind, BESS, and substation components to interact reliably, we view communication and control as an overall system. We bundle requirements from operations, direct marketing, grid operators, and EPC, translate them into a clear technical architecture, and maintain consistent interfaces, responsibilities, and documentation throughout. This results in a solution that runs stably in everyday use – and remains manageable in case of changes or disruptions.

IT concept – the network foundation of your power plant or BESS system

We create a powerful, fail-safe, and consistently protected network infrastructure for your PV, wind, BESS, or SS project. All relevant systems are reliably connected, cleanly separated, and controllably accessible – regardless of whether it concerns monitoring, service access, or the connection of external partners. The result is a clear network structure that can grow with the project and forms the basis for secure operation.

Router & internet connection: Design of a site-appropriate connection including redundancy options, so that the plant remains accessible even under difficult conditions.

Firewall & network segmentation: Separation of communication areas (e.g., operational management vs. video/security) and clear rules on where data goes. This reduces risks and simplifies operation and troubleshooting.

Network distribution: Structured, plant-specific design of network distribution – including redundancy where it makes sense for availability and operational safety.

Remote access & authorization concept: Defined access for operators, O&M, direct marketers, or other stakeholders – with traceable roles and permissions.

Documentation of the IT structure: Network overviews and device structure as a basis for acceptance, operation, and later adjustments.

SCADA concept – control, supervision, and data management

Our SCADA system forms the central control center for your project. It combines power plant control, system supervision, and data management into a continuous overall system, ensures grid conformity, and supports secure connection and stable power marketing.

Power plant control & interfaces: Conception of the control logic and the necessary interfaces to the grid/market – tailored to the project constellation. We also implement hybrid control concepts.

Measurement & data points  (signal/data model): Definition of relevant measured values and status signals (incl. integration of sensors / weather / station signals), so that monitoring, analyses, and verifications run on a consistent data basis.

Manufacturer-independent data acquisition: Structure for how data from different components are combined and provided in a standardized way – instead of isolated solutions per manufacturer.

Availability & redundancy (where sensible): Conception of stability/redundancy aspects for critical functions to avoid downtimes and operational interruptions.

Optional security/peripheral integration: Integration of, for example, camera/security signals into the overall architecture – without overloading operational management.

When are our IT and SCADA services useful?

If you are designing a new plant

If communication and control are cleanly structured from the outset, subsequent rework and expensive compromises in operation can be avoided. Interfaces to grid operators and direct marketers can be considered early on – including documentation that is reliable for financing and later transactions.

If you want to set up a secure and reliable communication system (new or existing)

A professionally designed SCADA and IT setup protects against unauthorized access and reduces the risk of operational interruptions. At the same time, it creates clear responsibilities and a structure that is quickly understandable in case of service.

If remote monitoring, remote control, or direct marketing need to function smoothly

Direct marketing and remote control requirements place specific expectations on availability and data provision. A well-thought-out SCADA and IT concept ensures that operational data and control signals reliably reach where they are needed.

If grid connection, acceptances, or certification/verification processes are pending

At the latest when verifications and acceptances are being prepared, communication and control technology must be consistently designed and documented. Early conceptualization helps to avoid queries and delays in project execution.

If you want to expand or modify your plant

Adding storage, additional generation units, or changes to monitoring/control technology require a review of the existing architecture. With a robust concept, new components can be integrated without unnecessarily disturbing ongoing operations.

If a change of operator or direct marketer is imminent

When switching, access, interfaces, and data flows often change. A clear SCADA and IT structure with clean documentation makes the transition faster, more secure, and less error-prone.

If you want to be prepared for increasing information security requirements

Requirements for information security and evidence management are increasing – even independently of formal thresholds. Those who set up the architecture robustly early on avoid frantic retrofitting under time pressure.

For planned sale or refinancing

For buyers, investors, and banks, a traceable, well-documented communication and control structure is a mark of quality. It reduces queries in the due diligence process and builds confidence in the plant’s operational capability.

IT security & regulation – know requirements, plan future-proof systems

Regulatory requirements for the IT security of energy plants are growing – and now affect far more operators than just a few years ago.

Since 2017, power generation plants with a net rated output of 104 MW or more have been classified as Critical Infrastructure (CI). Since then, operators must maintain an Information Security Management System (ISMS), report IT disruptions, and demonstrate comprehensive security measures.

Since December 2025, the German NIS-2 Implementation Act significantly expands this scope: energy companies with 50 or more employees or an annual turnover of €10 million can now be obligated – regardless of installed capacity. A new aspect is the personal liability of management for violations.

In parallel, the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA, in force since December 2024, mandatory from December 2027) demands “Security by Design” at the product level: manufacturers of networked components – routers, power plant controllers, SCADA hardware – must demonstrate cybersecurity from the ground up and ensure it throughout the entire product lifecycle.

We plan IT and SCADA systems to meet these requirements today – or to be scalable for them if needed. Specifically, this means:

  • Network segmentation according to IEC 62443 – clear separation of communication areas, e.g., SCADA from CCTV or service access
  • Encrypted communication & certificate-based authentication – no unsecured access to plant systems
  • Traceable authorization concepts – documented access rights for all user groups
  • GDPR-compliant data storage – servers located in Germany, encrypted backups
  • Complete documentation and evidence – for regulatory requirements, audits, and verification processes
  • CRA-compliant components – we exclusively use hardware and software that meet the requirements of the Cyber Resilience Act

greentech product solutions for IT and SCADA infrastructure

Our in-house, proven solutions are coordinated – for continuous plant communication from the IT base to control. Depending on the project, we also integrate individual components into existing structures.

greenCOM - Communication cabinet

greenCOM is the physical hub of plant communication: Data and control signals converge here in an organized manner and are structured for onward transmission to the relevant systems. This creates a clear, well-documented structure in the control cabinet – so that operations and service can quickly find what they need. Project-specific pre-integration ensures consistent system architecture and traceability even with expansions or adjustments.

greenACCESS – Secure remote access

greenACCESS stands for secure remote access to the power plant network – typically via a protected VPN connection, allowing authorized stakeholders to view data and intervene specifically if necessary. This transforms a mere internet connection into an authorization-based, protected remote access for operations, service, and partners. It facilitates collaboration and fault resolution without diluting the plant’s security logic.

greenSIM – Provider-independent mobile connectivity

greenSIM is the component for the most continuously stable mobile data connection possible – especially at locations with fluctuating network quality. The SIM card is provider-independent and uses the strongest available mobile network, ensuring the plant remains communicable. This allows operational data to be transmitted reliably and remote services to remain accessible.

greenCORE – Power plant control & data management via our power plant controllers

The greenCORE PPC (power plant controller) is the heart of the SCADA system: It combines power plant control with a central data logger for precise feed-in. Grid and marketing specifications can be implemented on a project-specific basis, and operational data can be provided consistently – for PV, wind, BESS, or hybrid plants. Authorized partners can access relevant data via defined interfaces.

The greenCORE DM is responsible for data acquisition: It integrates sensors, weather stations, as well as station and substation signals, records all measured values, and provides them in a manufacturer-independent and standardized manner. This ensures that data acquisition is independent of the chosen inverter data logger, and all relevant data points are fully mapped from the outset.

Questions & Answers

on the topic of SCADA and IT for renewable energy systems

What is the difference between an IT concept and a SCADA concept?

The IT concept forms the technical basis: It defines the secure internet connection of the PV plant, BESS, or SS, the network architecture, and the communication setup between all stakeholders – grid operators, direct marketers, installers, and service technicians. The SCADA concept builds upon this and regulates how production data is collected, processed, and transmitted to relevant stakeholders – and how the plant is remotely monitored and controlled via this infrastructure.

When do I need a professional SCADA & IT concept?

As soon as plant planning takes more concrete shape, the SCADA & IT concept should be an integral part of it. If requirements are only considered retrospectively, interface conflicts and additional implementation effort will arise.

Can greentech modernize an existing plant's SCADA & IT system?

Yes – we analyze existing systems, identify needs for action, and recommend expansion, migration, or new systems depending on the condition and requirements. The goal is a future-proof system that meets current security and communication requirements.

Can greentech integrate individual components into an existing SCADA & IT system?

Yes – for example, if an existing plant is expanded with a BESS or new communication requirements arise. We check compatibility with the existing system and integrate new components in a way that keeps the overall system stable and secure.

For which plant types does greentech offer IT and SCADA solutions?

sWe plan SCADA & IT systems for PV plants, battery storage (BESS), and combinations of both technologies – from individual projects to multi-asset portfolios. Furthermore, we plan and deliver the SCADA and IT technology for substations.

How does collaboration with other project stakeholders work?

We coordinate directly with EPC companies, grid operators, manufacturers, and operators. Interface management is an integral part of our service.

Is IT security also relevant for smaller plants?

Yes – IT security is relevant regardless of plant size. Every grid-connected plant is a potential target for attack. We implement security measures that match the respective plant type and risk profile.

Does greentech support CI requirements?

Yes – we plan SCADA and IT systems to serve as a technical basis for fulfilling CI (KRITIS), NIS-2, and cyber obligations. This includes network segmentation, extended logging, certificate-based access control, and complete documentation of evidence. Whether your plant already falls under CI today or will in the future – we design systems to be scalable accordingly from the outset.

What is greenACCESS?

greenACCESS is our solution for secure, VPN-protected remote access to IT and SCADA systems – with two-factor authentication, certificate-based access, and encrypted communication. Accesses are logged and traceable at all times.

What is greenSIM?

greenSIM is the greentech solution for secure internet access for PV plants, BESS, and substations. The SIM card operates provider-independently and flexibly connects to the strongest available mobile network – for the most stable connection possible to the plant and undisturbed data transmission.

Does greentech develop its own hardware?

greentech does not develop hardware, but it does develop the software that runs on it. We combine proven hardware components from German providers with our own software solutions and configure the overall system project-specifically.
