Berlin-based solar contracting provider RE.source has recently commissioned one of Germany’s largest rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems in Leipzig. Spanning two rooftop areas totalling approximately 110,000 m², the installation consists of 26,868 modules and delivers a capacity of 11 MWp. As an integrated PV specialist greentech supported RE.source throughout the entire planning, construction and commissioning phases, providing various services in the field of Engineering & Technical Advisory, with a particular focus on electrical design and system communication. Moving forward, greentech will also take over the technical operations management of the plant.
From initial plant and grid connection design to detailed planning, including communication and control technology
During the early design phase, greentech developed initial layouts for the rooftop areas, created yield forecasts, and later took over the detailed technical and execution design required for the system’s construction. To obtain the commissioning and system certification, greentech worked closely with the grid operator regarding the protection and control concept. As part of the grid connection process, the team conducted detailed load flow and short-circuit calculations, as well as an assessment of potential grid impacts.
Another key aspect of the project was the design and implementation of the communication and control technology. This included the concept for continuous data collection and the system’s data integration to enable seamless remote monitoring by greentech. Additionally, greentech coordinated with the grid operator on the development of the communication and control concept. Due to missing infrastructure on-site, greentech designed a wireless communication system and managed the configuration, procurement, programming, and commissioning of all communication and control components. To ensure long-term operational security, greentech also oversees the management of secure remote access (VPN connections), performs regular backups of network components, and implements necessary security updates.
Technical assessment confirms high quality of construction work
Upon project completion, greentech conducted a technical assessment to support the acceptance process. This confirmed the high quality of the construction work, verified the proper condition and functionality of the PV system, and provided a complete system documentation to RE.source.
RE.source highlights greentech’s comprehensive expertise and the high-quality execution throughout the entire process. “Their system design expertise, precision, and flexibility contributed significantly to the project’s success,” says Tilo Nahrath, Managing Director of RE.source. “In this project, we faced communication challenges with the grid operator. greentech demonstrated exceptional expertise in resolving unclear requirements between the grid operator and the system certifier. Additionally, missing preparatory work on the building itself posed further challenges, for which greentech quickly developed solutions and coordinated them with the certification body and the grid operator. We are pleased to entrust this project’s operations management to such capable hands.”
Good basis for successful operations management and further cooperation
Jörn Carstensen, Chief Technical Officer (CTO) at greentech, also reflects positively on the collaboration: “We are truly impressed by the outstanding project that RE.source has realized here. Utilizing available space for renewable energy generation is not only ecologically beneficial but also economically sound. By being involved from an early stage, we were able to incorporate our experience from operating more than 300 plants. The resulting quality is a benefit for all stakeholders: RE.source as the operator of a reliable system, the building user with maximum renewable energy supply, and ourselves for a seamless transition into technical operations management. We look forward to expanding our collaboration on many more projects to come.”
Overall, greentech currently manages a rooftop portfolio of 11 systems with approximately 35 MWp in technical operations for RE.source.
