greentech joins Solar Stewardship Initiative by SolarPower Europe and Solar Energy UK

Mar 1, 2024

Hamburg, 01.03.2024 – greentech has joined the Solar Stewardship Initiative (SSI), recently launched by SolarPower Europe and Solar Energy UK, as part of its ESG strategy and with the aim of ensuring and sustainably promoting social and environmental standards in the supply chains used by greentech.

The aim of the SSI is to promote responsible, transparent and sustainable production, procurement and management of materials in the solar value chain, pre-dominantly solar modules. It brings together manufacturers and developers from the global solar industry. The SSI Board is supported by a neutral Stakeholder Advisory Group representing different perspectives from civil society, academia, independent experts and other relevant non-industry stakeholders.

Last year, the SSI developed an ESG standard, which signatory members commit to using when purchasing materials, thereby showing their commitment to a sustainable supply chain. The SSI uses independent auditors to check its signatory manufacturers for compliance with the standard and makes the results available to buyers within the initiative. In this way, a cross-industry ESG standard is established and independently verified at the same time.

For greentech, the membership of the SSI means a further step towards more sustainable procurement: When we order solar modules, we can refer to the ESG standard which is supported and complied with by our suppliers of solar modules, and the certification results of the SSI. The multistakeholder ESG standard developed together with the suppliers enables us to better consider sustainability factors in our purchasing process and to make better, sustainable purchasing decisions based on this independently verified data,” says Fabian Wany, Head of Project Realisation, summarising the added value of the initiative for greentech. “At the same time, the SSI offers us a platform to help shape further processes and standards on an industry level”.

By joining the SSI, greentech is also expressing commitment towards two of its five defined focus SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals): SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth and SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals.
