Battery energy storage system (BESS)

A battery energy storage system, also known as BESS, stores electrical energy in batteries so that it can be released again when needed. Energy producers use these systems to temporarily store electricity generated from renewable sources such as solar or wind power in order to balance grid fluctuations. As a result, BESS are a key component of the energy transition.

BESS typically consist of battery modules (usually based on lithium-ion technology), a control system, inverters, and intelligent software that automatically manages charging and discharging processes. Energy storage systems cover a wide range of applications. They range from small-scale residential systems to large-scale megawatt storage facilities used in energy trading markets or for grid stabilization.

BESS systems enable efficient load management, reduce CO₂ emissions, and improve security of supply. They are considered a key technology for a sustainable and decentralized energy supply.
